How To Speed up your computer

Computers slow down over time, and there are several reasons for that, but there's no need to worry because tools included inside Windows 7 and available on the internet can help you put some speed on your computer.

Defragmenting the drive

After some time of installing and uninstalling, files tend to get fragmented, and when they do, your computer has to search in different locations to access it.

If you haven't done this in a while, let's say 3 or more months of regular use, you might want to try this method, it will take several hours to finish but it will be worth it:

  1. Press the on your taskbar.
  2. Under All Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools
    Click on Disk Defragmenter.
  3. Click on the "Defragment Disk" button.

As I've said earlier, this will take some hours but if you haven't done in a while, it's worth the time.

Clean your Registry

Installing applications requires your Windows to modify the registry, and everytime you uninstall a program the computer leaves traces of that installation in your registry, and this can slow down your computer overall performance.

Unfortunately Windows doesn't include an application for this, to fix this problem you need to download one.

Where can I find one

There are several choices of registry cleaners you can choose from, some are free others cost some money.

Advanced System Care

It heals and speeds up the PC in just 1 click. It is the simplest way to protect, clean, repair, and optimize the PC. I also find that it can scan and fix what other tools miss. I really like it and best of all, it is completely free. They do not insert adware to your PC and they do not spy on you. Advanced SystemCare has received very positive reviews from publications such as Forbes, CNET and PC Magazine.

Of course there are several others you can choose from, I'm just naming a good example I personally use but you can also choose your own registry cleaner and some antivirus like Norton have them included.

Repairing your hard disk

Windows comes with an application that can check your computer for bad sectors, bad sector can slow down your computer because the hard disk has a tough time reading them.

  1. Right-Click on your disk under Computer and click on Propeties.
  2.

  3. Under the Tools tab, click the Check Now button.
  4.

  5. Click on "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", and then click on start.
  6.

  7. It may ask you to restart your computer, if you click Yes the next time your computer restarts it will do a scan disk.

  8. Warning
This process may take more than two hours, I recommend doing it before you go to sleep especially if you have a big hard disk.
