Sound card have improved a lot since the computer first came out, they offer a set of features such as the ability to convert low bitrate music to higher bitrate music.(Convert from low quality to high quality)
By using its software(Drivers) it can convert audio signals for you to hear, it can also accelerate computer games (if you are using the high sound quality in the settings).
Sound cards are mainly used for:

- Playing videos, DVD and Blu-Ray
- Audio editing and mixing
- Watching tv on your computer
If you got a good speaker system, I always recommend getting a good sound card, it changes dramatically the sound coming from your computer.

Optical
Optical carries only audio but it's the best audio cable in terms of quality.
Choosing a sound card
Nowadays, you can choose the brand of your computer sound card very easily, because there's only two choices:

The Creative Sound Blaster soundcard is a really great card for just about everything.But if you don't have a good speaker system just stick with the one that came with your motherboard.
M-Audio is another sound card mainly used for professional pursposes, like musicians.
