Types of computer memory

Every computer needs memory and this article explains the difference between a type of memory and its use, there are a LOT of memory types so I will only be discussing the best memory for you.

There are several types but the ones we are going to be discussing here are the ones you should use why?, because they are the ones currently used in all machines.
You will usually see the memory in the stores by their module so I compiled a table below to help you find the right motherboard for the memory, remember the higher the module the faster it is because the transfer rate is higher.
So basically there are just to types you should choose:

  • DDR2
  • DDR3

Memory Types

DDR2

Double Data Rate 2, is what computer used to have after 2003, however this type of computer memory it's getting old, it's still usable especially if you only want a computer to surf the web and/or create documents.

DDR3

Double Data Rate 3, is the relatively new type of computer memory, especially useful for gaming, for a heavy resource application, or if you want a future proof memory.

Computer Modules

DDR2

Types Module Speed
DDR2-400 PC2-3200 *
DDR2-533 PC2-4200
PC2-4300
**
DDR2-667 PC2-5300
PC2-5400
***
DDR2-800 PC2-6400 ****

DDR3

Types Module Speed
DDR3-800 PC3-6400 *
DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 **
DDR3-1333 PC3-10600 ***
DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 ****

Advantages and Disadvantages

Type Advantage Disadvantage
DDR2
  • Cheaper memory

  • You can use a cheaper motherboard
  • Significantly slower than DDR3

  • Less power efficiency

  • Slower data transfer
DDR3
  • Better power efficiency

  • Higher transfer rate
  • Higher price

  • Higher price of the motherboard

Recommendations

I recommend to buy the DDR3 computer memory cause like I said before is future proof, that means that it will pass a longer time before you need to upgrade your memory, however if you are going to just surf the web and just need a really cheap computer, go with DDR2, computer memory nowadays are very inexpensive so, I recommend 4 GB + to any type of computer memory you choose.
